The distinguished neurologist and pioneer in psychological medicine, Dr Maurice Nicoll, son of Sir William Robertson Nicoll, took a first in Science at Cambridge before going on to St Bartholomew's Hospital to qualify in medicine, and then to Vienna, Berlin and Zurich. His work with Dr Jung at this time was to have a lasting influence on him.
After meeting the Russian philosopher P.D. Ouspensky in 1921, he went the next year to study with G.I. Gurdjieff at the Institute in Fontainebleau. In 1931, at Ouspensky's behest, he initiated a programme of work devoted to passing on the ideas he had received, and this was sustained until his death in 1953. Throughout his life he retained a special interest in the essential Christian teachings, in Neoplatonism, and in dream interpretation.
The weekly talks he gave to his study groups over many years were collected and edited during his lifetime under the title 'Psychological Commentaries on the Teaching of Gurdjieff & Ouspensky', of which Kenneth Walker has said: 'they will remain the standard work on the subject for as long as these ideas are of interest to mankind'.
His other published works include 'The New Man', an interpretation of the parables and miracles of Christ. 'The Mark' is a further collection of papers on the subject of Christ's teaching; and 'Living Time and the Integration of the Life' is about the experience of higher dimensions in relation to daily life, from both practical and theoretical points of view.
