The Reign of Quantity and the Signs of the Times, René Guénon
The present volume carries the discussion forward that was initiated by the author in his book, namely, La Crise du Monde moderne. As the title of the book suggests, the author has been deeply concerned with the malady that has gripped the modern civilization. While analyzing the sickness of contemporary civilization, the author has equally concerned itself with the study of such traditional societies, particularly the societies of the Orient, which still maintain unbroken continuity between the past and the present. As to whether this historical continuity will continue into the future is a mute question, as most of the Oriental societies are giving in to the pressures that Westernization has unleashed.
René Guénon (1886-1951) is without doubt one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century. Frithjof Schuon has said of him that he had the central function of restoring the great principles of traditional metaphysics to Western awareness and he added that Guénon gave proof of a universality of understanding that for centuries had had no parallel in the Western world.
