The New Man, Thomas Merton

Thomas Merton is one of the very few contemporary writers on the spiritual life who can speak to men in the present age in a language they can understand.

The New Man is about living the full life of a Christian in a world that is increasingly out of touch with authentic humanity as it is out of touch with God. Two main threads run through the book. The first is concerned with our knowing who we really are and what we must do if we are to recover possession of our true selves. "It is a spiritual disaster, writes Fr Merton, "for a man to rest content with his exterior identity, with his passport picture of himself... Since we are made in the image and likeness of God, there is no other way to find out who we are than by finding, in ourselves , the divine image."

To this theme of the true nature of personality is linked an exploration of the attitude contrary to the Christian. Fr Merton summarizes this latter by applying the Greek myth of Prometheus to our own day and age. "Prometheus is the mystic without faith, who believes neither in himself nor in God... the man who needs fire from outside himself is in a certain sense condemned to live out his life in the hope of some impossible ecstasy.
