The Gulistan or Rose Garden of Sa'di has been termed the most famous work in Persian literature. Written in the thirteenth century, it blends philosophic wisdom with entertaining narrative and includes topics as diverse as 'Love and Youth', 'The Manners of Kings', 'The Morals of Dervishes', 'The Advantages of Silence' and 'Rules for Conduct'. The reverse of squeamish, Sa'di brings to his observations a refreshing candour and lively resilience.

The present edition is the only complete translation so far made and faithfully follows the version by Edward Rehatsek first printed in 1888 for F. F. Arbuthnot and Sir Richard Burton's Kama Shastra Society. It is the fifth translation in the series which included the Kama Sutra and is now openly published in this country for the first time. 

Besides Rehatsek's text, the book contains a Preface by W. G. Archer of the Victoria and Albert Museum, giving an account of previous translations and describing the circumstances in which the present un-bowdlerized version was made. It also discusses the book's current appeal. An Introduction by Professor G. M. Wickens, Professor of Islamic Literature, University of Toronto, evaluates Sa'di's character and assesses the book's place in Islamic literature.
