A history of Western Philosophy, D.W. Hamlyn
A history of philosophy shows a continuity of interests and problems, from the Greeks, who started it all, to the present day. In this, the first history of the subject to be written for several years, D.W. Hamlyn surveys the progress of those interests and those problems over two and a half millennia. A history of philosophy should itself be philosophy; his book therefore sets out to give an outline of the arguments that philosophers throughout history have used to support their conclusions, as well as an assessment of those arguments. As such, it forms an invaluable source book of philosophical considerations: not just a record of human error that has bred philosophical fallacies, but a source of wider understanding. Any such history must be selective as regards the figures and movements that are included. The present book includes, however, all the main protagonists in the history of philosophy, presented in such a way as to provide a picture of the trends of philosophical thought down the years. Professor Hamlyn's chief aim has been throughout to make that thought as accessible as possible.
